The Differences between IELTS and PTE Academic

For people who are still confused about the differences between PTE Academic and IELTS, here we have short explanation about it. IELTS usually tests the language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and also writing separately whereas PTE Academic is always known as integrated skills test so there would be connection between those four skills and you are not just take those four skills tests at the same time but one skill and the other would be connected. Simply put, you would answer the questions that would likely evaluate more than one skill at that time and there also would not be section for each skill. For instance, you would be asked to read a text and then summarize it (reading skills and speaking skills).

And about the format, which is the biggest difference, IELTS is an entirely paper based test even though you can take an IELTS practice online but in the actual test, it is actually a paper based test, and what about PTE Academic? This is where the two are different. If IELTS is a paper based test then it means that PTE Academic is a completely computer based test. This is why you only need one day to complete your PTE Academic whereas you will need at least two days to do your IELTS because you need to do reading, listening, and writing on the same day and then do your speaking test the next day.

The main difference between these two especially in the mater of content is that IELTS is less authentic than PTE Academic specially on the listening section because it is spoken by actors and for PTE Academic, they use real lectures. The scales of the results are also different. IELTS is using a 9 band scale whereas PTE Academic is using the scale from 10-90.
